Questions to ask your wedding photographer on a consult call

Hi! I am Elena, a US-based wedding and engagement photogarpher at Focus on the Moment. Like most of my colleagues I like my first meeting with a couple to be a consult call. Think of it as a first date—but way less awkward, no need to split the check, and absolutely no ghosting afterward. This is just a chance to see if we’re a good fit!

But let’s be real - there’s a lot of extra fear around the word consultation. Brides instantly think, Is this a trap? Will I be lured into something like a timeshare presentation and  leave with my entire wedding budget gone? I hear you. But actually, it’s the opposite.

Why Consultaion Calls Aren't Scary

Pushy sales tactics make my skin crawl. Maybe it’s from growing up in a communist country, where sales pitches weren’t really a thing. Maybe it’s just human nature—but I believe booking a wedding photographer should feel exciting, not like an obligation.

A consult is a no-strings-attached conversation to help figure out if we click. No pressure, no gimmicks. This is an easygoing chat where all the important questions get answered—like how photography fits into the wedding day, what to expect, and whether my terrible puns are a dealbreaker.

So, grab a coffee (or something stronger—I don’t judge), and let’s talk weddings!

By the time you're scheduling a consult call, you’ve probably already seen the vendor's work and read the reviews. So, what’s left to ask? A lot, actually.

Here’s a list of 20 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer before you sign the dotted line.

The Big Picture: Experience & Approach

Before anything else, make sure the photographer's style and workflow align with your vibe.

  1. Do you help with posing, or are we on our own?

Some photogs blend into the background, capturing moments documentary-style. Others offer more direction, ensuring every detail is just so. Some turn your wedding into a full-blown photoshoot, caring more about their future portfolio than you. Understanding their approach will help you feel confident they’ll match your vision.

  2. What’s your experience with tricky lighting?

Churches can be dark, midday sun is harsh, and reception halls can have questionable lighting. Ask how they handle different conditions and if they have examples of weddings in similar settings.

  3. Do you help with timeline planning?

A great photographer doesn’t just show up and snap away—they help structure your timeline, so everything runs smoothly. Ask if they offer guidance on things like the best time for portraits, golden-hour shots, and keeping the day stress-free.

  4. Will you be the one photographing our wedding?

Some studios have multiple lensmen, so be sure you’re speaking to the actual person who will be there on your day. You want to feel comfortable with them, not just their brand.

  5. Do you work with a second photographer? Should we have one?

Adding a second shooter can bump up the price, but sometimes they’re a must. Like if you and your partner are getting ready in two far-apart locations. Some photogs are solo pros who’ve got it all covered, while others bring an assistant to help with lighting, gear, and possibly a snack break. There’s no right or wrong here, just make sure the photographer has a solid workflow and doesn’t panic if they lose a lens cap.

  6. Do you work well with videographers?

If you're booking a videographer, ask how the photographer collaborates with them. A good team works together seamlessly—without stepping into each other’s shots or making your day feel like a film production set.

  7. Have you worked at our venue before?

Not a dealbreaker, but good to know how they handle new locations.

  8. Do you offer engagement sessions? Should we do one?

A pre-wedding shoot can take wedding photos to the next level. This is when a photographer actually teaches posing techniques so that on the big day, there’s no time wasted figuring out the details. Can an engagement session be skipped? Absolutely—especially if it’s not a priority or one has already been done.

Logistics & Expectations

Nailing down the details now avoids surprises later.

  1. How many photos do we get, and when do we get them?

Some studios cap the number of images they deliver, while others send a full, carefully curated gallery. Be clear on how many final images to expect and when they’ll be ready— because no one wants to wait forever to relive the day.

  2. What are our rights with the images?

Some photographers include full printing rights, while others charge extra for digital files. Make sure you understand what’s included—can you print your own albums, or are you required to order through them? Can you share freely on social media? Clarity is key!

  3. Do you offer albums and prints?

If having a skillfully designed wedding album or high-quality prints matters to you, ask about options. Some pros offer gorgeous custom albums, while others focus only on digital delivery.

  4. Do you provide sneak peeks?

Waiting for wedding photos can feel endless, but some photographers send a few sneak peeks within days. Ask if that’s something they offer and how long the full gallery takes.

What Could Go Wrong? (And How To Handle It)

No one wants to think about worst-case scenarios, but a pro should have a plan.

  1. What happens if you get sick… or, you know, die?

Okay, morbid, but fair! Life happens—what’s the backup plan? A professional photographer should have a solid Plan B—whether it’s an associate stepping in or a network of trusted colleagues who can cover in an emergency.

  2. What happens if your gear malfunctions?

It happens more often than you might think! The only acceptable answer is this: 'I bring backup cameras and lenses to ensure I won’t miss a thing.’

  3. Have you worked with… [insert your unique challenge here]?

Whether it’s a sparkler exit, a cultural tradition, or a 300-guest wedding in a tight space, ask if they have experience handling your specific wedding elements.

  4. How do you handle family photos?

Family portraits can easily become chaotic—especially when Uncle Bob vanishes to the restroom while 15 relatives are lined up and waiting. Ask how they keep things organized, so family photos don’t eat up half your cocktail hour.

  5. What if it rains?

Because Mother Nature does what she wants—what’s the plan for rain, snow, or blinding sun? A great photographer adapts and brings the right gear (and attitude) to handle any lighting or weather conditions.

Final Steps: Booking & Communication

Understanding the process ensures a smooth experience from start to finish.

  1. What’s the booking process like?

Before you hang up, ask about the next steps. Is a contract required? What’s the payment schedule? When are final details confirmed? The smoother the process, the easier the lead-up to your wedding will be.

  2. How do we stay in touch before the wedding?

Will you have planning meetings? Do they send reminders? Is email best, or do they prefer texts? Knowing how and when you'll communicate will keep things stress-free.

BONUS Question:

What’s the worst thing that has happened at a wedding you photographed, and how did you handle it?

You'll learn a lot from their answer—not just about their honesty, confidence, and sense of humor, but also about their problem-solving skills. Because experience isn’t just about taking pretty pictures—it’s about staying cool under pressure.

Final Thoughts:

A consult call isn’t just about ticking boxes—it's about understanding what to expect, how you’re protected, and making sure you vibe with your photographer. You’ll spend more time with them on your wedding day than with almost anyone else, so you want to feel at ease!
